Enhancing Client Emergency Emergency Preparedness Through Code Drills

Summary: 

Xenon Health implemented a code drill program with client surgery centers to ensure emergency readiness, improve consistency in response, and promote a culture of proactive safety.

 

Problem: 

Assessments of facility emergency protocols and preparedness. Even though serious intraoperative events were uncommon, Xenon Health serious intraoperative events were uncommon, Xenon Health prioritizes patient safety and quality improvement, proudly  upholding these core pillars of the field of anesthesia. Our team identified areas for improvement, including confidence with emergency protocols such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and airway management, clarity in roles and responsibilities during serious events, familiarity with the crash cart, and coordination within interdisciplinary response teams.

 

Solution: 

Xenon Health launched a code drill program to provide regular training opportunities for clients, drawing on tens of thousands of cases worth of experience to design realistic and clinically valuable scenarios. Drills are particularly important for outpatient facilities, for whom perioperative emergencies are uncommon, to maintain readiness. The program emphasizes high-risk intraoperative events, clear role assignment protocols, hands-on equipment review with each facility’s own equipment, and monitoring and evaluation for each client to track performance and support regulatory compliance.

 

Result: 

This program resulted in measurable improvements, including increased confidence and fluency within clinical teams, corrections to equipment and medication preparedness, greater consistency across facilities, and stronger alignment with AAAASF, AAAHC, and state requirements.
